If you???ve got kids, of course you want to make sure they grow up fit and healthy. But you also know it???s hard to juggle work, family, and physical activity. Still, setting a healthy example is a good start. So if you???re looking for ways to get your kids involved, check out these tips.

When it comes to heart health, it???s important that we think not only of our own cardiovascular health but also that of future generations. A study last year found that obese children and teens have as much plaque in their arteries as a 45-year-old adult, setting them up for heart disease and other serious health conditions much earlier than their parents.

If you???ve got kids, of course you want to make sure they grow up fit and healthy. But you also know it???s hard to juggle work, family, and physical activity. Still, setting a healthy example is a good start; research shows that parents who are physically active increase the likelihood that their kids will be active as well. So if you???re looking for ways to get your kids involved, check out these tips.

Plan outdoor activities
Set aside one day a weekend to do something active as a family: swimming in the summer, sledding or hiking in the winter, or biking in the spring and fall. Taking along a picnic lunch???and splurging on some healthy snacks after a good workout???will help the day go by without a complaint.

Make chores fun
Instead of relegating each member of the family to doing separate chores by themselves, turn chores into a game you can all do together. Race to see how fast you can get the house cleaned, and then try to beat your old time the next week. Play music while you???re doing laundry, and enlist the kids to sing and dance while helping to fold and put clothes away. Take the dog for walks together, and squeeze in some running, roller-skating, or jump rope while you???re at it.

From the article:

The average kitchen remodel costs a staggering $18,856 ??? and high-end ones average $54,909. No bones about it: That’s a whole lotta cash.

But you don’t need to shell out big bucks to make a big impact in an outdated kitchen. Whether you’ve lived in your house for years or you just got the keys, here are some easy ways to give it a refresh:

Get new handles and pulls.
“Changing out cabinetry hardware is one of the easiest and quickest updates,” says HGTV’s Scott McGillivray, author of How to Add Value to Your Home. Look for colorful options or Scott’s favorite, a brushed nickel finish. But resist the temptation to get something too personal or cutesy. “I’ve seen people use hardware that looks like forks and spoons or mini chickens. Those options are fun, but they get old fast,” Scott warns.

Consider painting your cabinets.
Kristy Kropat, an interior designer based in San Francisco, recently moved into a new home, but she didn’t love the kitchen. A complete overhaul wasn’t in the cards (new cabinets are pricey!), so instead, she gave the cabinetry a fresh coat of paint.

The countertop was black, so she picked a light gray for the uppers and lime green for the lower cabinets to brighten things up. “Citrus-like colors ??? orange, yellow and green ??? look great in a kitchen,” she says.

Add a backsplash.
“The beauty of it is that it’s very limited in square footage,” Scott says. “The average backsplash is between 10 and 40 square feet.” His point: It’s an easy-to-tackle area that won’t break the bank. “Even if you’re spending $5 a square foot, you’re talking about a couple hundred bucks in tiles.”

Don’t have the skills to install tile or cash for a contractor? Try paint instead. Just make sure you pick up a semi-gloss, Kristy adds. The glossier the paint, the more it will resist moisture ??? and you can simply wipe it clean when dinner is over.

From the article:

Lack of sleep isn’t the only thing sapping your energy. Little things you do (and don’t do) can exhaust you both mentally and physically, which can make getting through your day a chore. Here, experts reveal common bad habits that can make you feel tired, plus simple lifestyle tweaks that will put the pep back in your step.

You don’t drink enough water
Being even slightly dehydrated???as little as 2% of normal fluid loss???takes a toll on energy levels, says Amy Goodson, RD, a dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine. Dehydration causes a reduction in blood volume, explains Goodson, which makes the blood thicker. This requires your heart to pump less efficiently, reducing the speed at which oxygen and nutrients reach your muscles and organs. To calculate your normal fluid needs, take your weight in pounds, divide in half and drink that number of ounces of fluid a day, Goodson recommends.

You’re not consuming enough iron
An iron deficiency can leave you feeling sluggish, irritable, weak, and unable to focus. “It makes you tired because less oxygen travels to the muscles and cells,” says Goodson. Boost your iron intake to reduce your risk of anemia: load up on lean beef, kidney beans, tofu, eggs (including the yolk), dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, and peanut butter, and pair them with foods high in vitamin C (vitamin C improves iron absorption when eaten together), suggests Goodson. Note: an iron deficiency may be due to an underlying health problem, so if you’re experiencing these symptoms of iron deficiency, you should visit your doc.

You have a glass of wine (or two) before bed
A nightcap sounds like a good way to unwind before falling asleep, but it can easily backfire. Alcohol initially depresses the central nervous system, producing a sedative effect, says Allen Towfigh, MD, medical director of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine, P.C., in New York City. “But it ultimately sabotages sleep maintenance.” Alcohol creates a rebound effect as it’s metabolized, which creates an abrupt surge in the adrenaline system, he says. This is why you’re more likely to wake up in the middle of the night after you’ve been drinking. Dr. Towfigh recommends stopping all alcohol three to four hours before bedtime.

From the article:

Responsibility for the fire safety of your building lies with each and every resident. That’s why it is so important that you plan together to keep your building as fire safe as possible and learn the right thing to do should fire break out. The first place to start is to learn the facts.

  • Smoking is the #1 cause of all fatal apartment fires. And, nearly a third of them are caused by someone smoking in bed.
  • Most residential fires occur at night when condos and apartments are most heavily populated.

Be Prepared! Plan Ahead for Everyone’s Safety!
Meet with your landlord or building manager to devise fire safety plans for your building. As part of your group planning, explore your building. Know every possible exit, including exits from laundry, storage, and recreation rooms. If hallways become smoky in a fire, your memory can help you find a way out. Remember never to use elevators in a fire. Keep exit and stairwell doors closed at all times, but not locked. And, keep exits clear of debris and storage.

Focus on these four key elements in your fire safety plan: prevention, detection, escape planning and practice, and fire department notification.

Prevention
An ounce of prevention can save your life. Prevention is your best insurance against fire. Take these simple fire safety precautions in your own unit to prevent fire from starting.

  • Be careful with smoking materials. Keep large ashtrays for smokers and never smoke in bed!
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet up high out of the reach of children.
  • Check regularly for electrical hazards, such as worn electrical cords, overloaded extension cords and outlets, and broken appliances.
  • Don’t store flammable liquids in your home, car, or anywhere else inside your building.
  • Don’t use balconies, porches, fire escapes or furnace rooms for storage. Fires starting in these areas can burn undetected.
