A new study offers some reassuring news for anyone stuck at a desk from 9 to 5.

Sitting for eight hours a day doesn???t seem to raise your risk for dying early, according to a new analysis of previous studies???but only if you get at least an hour of exercise daily.

The results, published this week in the Lancet, may be reassuring for people stuck behind a desk all day, say health experts, but it should also serve as an important reminder: If you have to sit for long periods, your daily workout is vital to your well-being.

The connection between sitting and dying has been studied extensively, and has inspired many scary headlines in the media. And while this research didn???t actually look at any new data, it did combine information from 16 previous studies in a way than hadn???t been done before.

Using this data, researchers were able to directly compare death rates over a certain period of time between people with different levels of sitting time and physical activity. ???Examining the joint effects of these two behaviors is important,??? they wrote, ???because most people engage in both behaviors every day.???

After crunching the numbers, the international team of researchers found that a sedentary lifestyle was indeed associated with an increased risk of death over the next decade. But the more people were active when they weren???t sitting, the more their risk went down. And for people who got the most daily exercise???at least 60 to 75 minutes of moderate physical activity???the increased risk disappeared completely.

In fact, those who sat for at least eight hours a day but were also in the highest exercise group actually had a lower risk of dying than those who sat for four hours or less but who reported the lowest amount of daily exercise (about five minutes a day).

From the article:

A child???s surroundings can have a huge impact on how they grow and develop, so parents always try to make their children???s living spaces as comfortable and fun as possible within their means. I???m not sure my parents could have afforded an indoor treehouse, but I still had plenty of pictures and bright, colorful artwork up on my walls. Sleeping in a bed that looks like a pirate ship or a princess??? wagon, as one can imagine, would probably fill a child???s life with endless hours of joy.

Of course, arguments can be made for and against these designs. Sure they all look pretty cool, but how safe is a children???s room with ladders, ropes, and strange out-of-place edges? There are plenty of opportunities here for kids to hurt themselves, depending on their age and how much they like to horse around, so these designs may not be for everyone. And as much as we like providing for our children, spoiling them rotten is also a bad idea!

Summer is a wonderful thing. The sun is shinning, the kids are out of school, and both you and your kids have a lot more free time. It???s all fun and games until your stir crazy kids start to drive you crazy. Kids get bored so easily and there???s nothing worse than having bored kids at home all day nagging you to do something fun. There are some fun and entertaining activities that you can easily set up for your kids to keep them occupied for hours. Some are inside activities and some are outside. Either way, your kids will have a blast as they do these 10 activities this summer.

Sponge Bullseye
Anything involving water during the summer is always fun and refreshing. A great way to play with water for a kid friendly game is to play ???darts??? with sponges and a large bullseye drawn in chalk. Draw the bullseye on your driveway in chalk and assign each circle with a point value. Then let the kids toss the wet sponges at the target. You can divide the kids up into teams or they can each compete on their own. If it ends up in a wet sponge fight, then even better. Let the kids get wet and have fun.

Portable Sandbox
Kids love playing in the sand, but going to the beach isn???t always an option. Also, building or buying your own sandbox can get expensive. The good news is that you can easily create your own portable sandbox for very low cost. All you need is a plastic storage box, sand, and sand toys. The kids can play in the sand box all day long and when they???re done, securely put the lid on top to ensure other animals and critters don???t get in.

Drip, Drip, Drench
This game is a fun new way to play ???Duck, Duck, Goose.??? Have your kids sit in a circle and take turns being ???it.??? The twist is that the person that???s ???it??? will take a wet sponge and as they go by each person they???ll drip a little water on each head until they drench a person who will then get up and try to catch them. It???ll keep the kids cooled off and they???ll be able to run around and enjoy time outside.

We spent the last week in Jackson, Wyoming, totally snowed-in and enjoying each other???s company. Trying to keep three boys busy in an ice-cold town with access only to a hotel suite and whatever Amazon Prime will deliver is???interesting. The experience made me realize that there are actually a TON of healthy family activities that can be enacted at the drop of a hat, if you have a few ideas and are open to going with the flow.

As a parent, it can be exhausting to come up with new activities to keep the kiddos entertained. I???ll admit that there was a time or two when I retreated to the bathroom just to get a moment of peace and brainstorm the next time-passer.

A lot was learned, though, and now I have a seemingly-endless reserve of entertainment ideas! You can benefit from my experience. Here???s my list of healthy family activities that are sure to keep the family busy and learning in as much time ??? or as little ??? as you have available.

Tell a never-ending story. Now that our boys are getting older, this has become a favorite pastime for us. A parent sets the scene like, ???Once upon a time, there lived a _______??? and then the kids fill in the blank. Take turns stopping abruptly at pivotal parts of the story and seeing where the next person takes it.
Practice yoga. With a 4-year-old, the downward dog can be downright hilarious.
Play a board game.
Bath time. Not just ANY bath time, though. Bust out the shaving cream and see what funny designs the kids can create on the walls!
Animal charades. Each kid thinks of an animal and acts it out until the other participants guess what it is.
Play Two Truths and a Lie. The old college frat favorite is actually a blast with kids. Each person takes turns saying three statements. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone else tries to guess what???s real and what???s not.
Indoor bowling. Set up some old water bottles and take turns trying to knock them down with a soft ball.
Bat a balloon back-and-forth. Balloons can come in handy for so many entertaining ideas, we always have some on-hand ??? even in our travel bags.
Play ???memory.??? Show the group a tray full of eight or nine items for 30 seconds. Then, give them 2 minutes to write down as many items as they can remember.
Masking tape bulls-eye. Create a target on the ground with masking tape and have your kids take turns seeing who can roll a small ball or toy car closest to the center.

Debating Between Having Your Children Share a Room Or Not? Decide After Reading This!

Having children share a room is sometimes a necessity. Sometimes it just works better for the children involved to be together. There are pros and cons of having children share a room though. From the article:

So, To Share or Not to Share a Bedroom?
There is absolutely no right or wrong answer to this question. Each family is so different with many factors to consider, primarily age gap, but for OUR family, it???s not even a question.

For those of you feeling that comparison pull or that slight wondering if somehow your children will resent you for not giving them an option, know that for the last eighteen years, our children have shared a room by our choice and I don???t have one regret.

Benefits of Siblings Sharing a Bedroom
Siblings as Best Friends
We often get asked how our kids are so close and one of my number one indicators points back to them sharing a room. Since they???ve been little, we???ve instilled in them that their sibling are their best friends. Their siblings are the ones to turn to when life gets hard. Family will always be there for you, but friends come and go. It???s about elevating the covenant of family relationships no matter what happens.

Learning to Share
Somewhere along the line, parents have bought into the lie that kids must all have their own, cool things, and that we must load them up on gifts and more stuff to line their closets. Not true! When sharing a room, you learn to share nearly everything. It???s up to us as parents to train out of them the ???Me first??? mentality and there???s no quicker way than making them share a room.

When they were little, they all had 1-2 special toys or items that were there own, but the rest of the toys were for the family. Most gifts were ???For the Boys, or ???For the Girls.???

Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution
Sharing a room offers plenty of opportunity to learn to work together, solve problems and resolve conflict. Now trust me, this has both enormous benefits, as well as stressful moments. Life is not always, ???oh sure, I???ll pick up that shirt because it???s mine.??? As they got older, there were war zone moments, but we are committed to conflict resolution and understanding the power of an apology. Letting the sun set on your anger is not an option in our family and talking it through was a critical priority.

Downfalls of Sharing a Bedroom (and how we dealt with it)
Opposite Personalities
That would be our girls. At fourteen and ten, this is the most challenging time we???ve had with room sharing. Our eldest is a Type A, very orderly and organized young lady, where as our youngest is carefree and creative. Order is not her first priority, but with a sister that bosses you into submission, you can bet that she has learned to pick up her things. As a mom, it???s a blessing in disguise and while I need to train our 14 year old into approaching her sister with more grace and asking politely, instead of ordering, she???s developing discipline based on the role model of her oldest sister and that is a joy!

They Need Their Own Space
Again, our girls. It???s very important that each girl have their own personal space, (where as our boys did not care, so each situation is different.) We???ve identified areas for them to do this by giving each their own closet, dresser and ???creative??? space. They also have a wall to decorate. I step back from this ???creative??? process and while there are times, I try to steer our ten year old in a certain direction, she pretty much reminds me, ???Mom, you said I could do this how every I want.??? Zing! Yep, I did.

Age Gap
The biggest age gap we have is between the two girls and that just under four years. As one is a teen, that???s a challenge and I can understand how a large age gap might not work in one room.

Even though our boys are close in age, a downfall we did have in their teen years began when one child became more defiant towards me and made some poor choices. The older children should be modeling and helping the younger ones grow in maturity, so when that is the precedent, it truly affects everyone in the house, especially those with which he???s sharing a room.

Sharing a room is a great option and it???s been the best choice for our family, but it???s not for everyone.

No one understands your family dynamics better than you, and there may be circumstances that don???t lend itself towards sharing a room.

That is your decision to make, but never, ever, feel that by not giving your child their own room, you are somehow short changing them. You are giving them a gift and while they might not see it now, they will have fond memories later on of slumber parties that never stopped and stories to share for generations to come.

From the article:

Whether it???s a playroom that inspires childhood adventure, a cozy bedroom filled with birdsong or a leafy sanctuary perfect for some peaceful meditation, a treehouse speaks to all of us as a place where we can free our imaginations. Here???s a selection of 10 amazing treehouses ??? in backyards in Russia, Germany, Italy, Japan and elsewhere around the world ??? that are giving dreams a place to roost.

Treehouse by Mom and Dad in Sweden
Location: Mj??lby, southern Sweden
Used for: A treetop playhouse for the family???s two children and their friends
Builders: Mom and Dad

There???s nothing wrong with your typical playhouse on the ground, but when the two children in this family got a bit older, they wanted something more exciting: a house in the trees.

Their dad was in complete agreement. He???d always loved building things and dreamed of having a treehouse himself as a child.

Now he and his family have this adorable one, built with parts of an existing playhouse and tucked within the branches of a grand old oak in their garden. The branches were so well spaced, no nails were required to secure the structure to the tree.

Special feature: Mom scoured secondhand stores and markets for pieces that suited the space, painted them white, then brightened the room further with textiles and cushions.

The children love using the treehouse to hang out with friends, especially when it???s raining and Mom sends up a basket of cinnamon buns.

Family Project in the United States
Location: Burlingame, California (about 20 miles south of San Francisco), United States
Used for: A family???s backyard treehouse
Builders: Linda and Doug Studebaker and their three children

The Studebakers??? treehouse, built in a 100-year-old coast live oak, was a family project and bonding experience. ???Thinking back, I found motivation from a combination of just being a good dad and the opportunity to do something creative and highly original,??? Doug says. ???Each of our three kids helped out from time to time, and in this way built up a little sweat equity and pride in the project.???

Special feature: The treehouse is outfitted with a collection of cozy quilts, vintage furniture, warm rugs and whimsical accessories. The tree???s long limbs wind their way through the interior. Doug says it was important to minimize damage to the tree and pay careful attention to its structure while building the house. This meant the design had to allow for the growth of the branches.
