It’s a larger-than-life, size-of-a-small-garage, big-enough-for-a-party kind of space.

From the article:

There are thousands of legitimate, ethical contractors in business around the country. Unfortunately, there are also scam artists looking to cheat you out of your money who pose as legitimate contractors. These “fly-by-night” operators often show up in communities impacted by natural disasters to try to scam distressed home owners into paying for shoddy repairs or work that they will never show up to perform.

Here are some warning signs to look out for:

Doesn’t have license and insurance. All professional contractors should be insured and able to show their certificate proving such insurance. Although all states do not require licensing, contractors in states requiring licenses should have it and be able to provide a copy.
Asks you to sign anything before you’ve hired them. If they want you to sign an “estimate” or “authorization” before you’ve made the decision to hire the contractor, look out. They may be trying to get you to sign what is an actual binding contract.
Doesn’t write contracts. Professionals have clear contracts that outline the job, process, the cost, and helps clarify how problems will be managed. If you don’t have a contract, you are not protected when something goes wrong. Don’t hire anyone who tells you a contract “won’t be necessary.”
Requires cash or payment in full before starting the job. Shady contractors demand cash and then run with the money. Many home owners have been stranded by paying in full up front. A deposit towards materials is common, but only pay it once you have a contract signed by both you and the contractor. It’s also suspect you’re asked to pay cash to a salesperson instead of a check or money order to a company.
Vastly underbids all other contractors. They may have the best price, but that doesn’t guarantee the best work. Such contractors may cut costs on quality, which can end up costing you more when you have to have the substandard work redone.

Looking for Ways to Stay Safe and Warm in Your Home This Winter? Checkout These Ideas!

Depending upon where you live in the country winters can be brutal. If you like staying cozy in your home then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve found this article for you with information on six different ways to stay safe and warm in your home. We hope it helps!

From the article:

Here are a few issues you might run into now that winter is coming.

Your Pipes Could Freeze:
Freezing pipes are the first thing people worry about when it comes to their house and ice and snow. When leftover water in your pipes freezes, it expands and can cause your pipes to burst. This can leave you with massive damage to your home and personal items, pricey repair work, and a really inconvenient water situation in the meantime. While most pipes run inside interior walls, in some older homes they run in the exterior walls. If this describes your home, make sure to properly insulate your pipes, as they may not be insulated already. If your sink is on an exterior wall, open the cabinets underneath it. This lets heat in from the house and keep the pipes nice and cozy. If all else fails, you can leave a trickle of water running to prevent any stagnant moisture from turning to ice.

It???s not only indoors pipes you need to worry about. Make sure to remember your spigot and sprinklers! If you don’t have a burst-proof spigot installed, make sure there’s no water hanging out there to freeze and expand. If you???re a snowbird and won???t be home all winter, try picking up a Freeze Sensor. It???ll send an alarm to the monitoring center and your phone when the temperature get to be too low, so you know to head on over and check the pipes.

Your Gutters Could Jump Ship:
Did you get a little lax about cleaning the fall leaves from your gutters? You might want to get out that ladder and do it before it snows again: the weight of the leaves combined with snow and ice can send your gutters crashing to the ground. Debris build-up in gutters can also lead to ice dams. These form when snow melts from your roofs heat, but as the temperature outside is still freezing water from the melting snow takes up residence in your clogged gutters and freezes again. This causes extra heavy blocks of ice and, as the water overflows from the gutters, can make those massive icicles that we all think are so pretty. They???re actually really dangerous???due to their size and weight, they can literally pull your gutters off your house while an unsuspecting person is standing underneath, admiring the snow-sculpture quality of your roof. So stick to the icicle lights instead and clean the gutters while you still have a chance.

Another great way to prevent ice dams is to make sure your roof is properly insulated. This will prevent as much of the snow from melting as possible. Let it melt when it???s actually time.

From the article:

The hangout zone of your home can be hard to arrange. So Real Simple asked two designers to sketch out solutions for three of the trickiest scenarios. Pull up a chair and take some notes.

Problem: If Your Living Room is Super Long and Narrow
Divvy up the space to get the most out of the oddly shaped square footage. Opt for either two defined spots or a more fluid layout. Take a look at some ideas below.

narrow-rectangle-circle

Solution #1: Rectangle + Circle
Section off the room with dual, seating-heavy groupings???a linear one and a piecier one. Filling out the space actually makes a room feel less confined, says McGee.

Start With a Pair of Sofas: Set up the main seating area with two same-size couches and a coffee table in between. ???Some people like a sectional to squeeze in more seating,??? says McGee. ???But in a tight room like this, it makes traffic flow tricky. A pair of sofas opens up the space better.???

Create a Circle Seating: Turn the second half of the room into a loungey area with four accent chairs surrounding a cocktail table about 18 inches high. ???It gives you an intimate spot for conversations or playing cards or board games, and it balances the other side???s chunkier setup,??? says McGee.

Add a Flowing, Organic Element: Ground the accent chairs and cocktail table with a cowhide rug. ???The curvy shape helps a narrow room feel less boxy,??? she says.

Solution #2: All-Inclusive
Break up the rectangle into areas that function well on their own or in tandem: a big, communal spot and a smaller, cozy, nook, says Lewis.

Choose Double-Duty Pieces: Cap the main seating area with a bench that can be reached from either side. ???The bench adds extra seating, and because it???s low, the division it creates is very subtle,??? says Lewis. ???You???re utilizing the narrow space better if you keep an open flow in the room.???

Decorate on an Angle: Outfit the smaller spot with an ottoman and two plush armchairs tilted to face the center of the room. ???That way, you can use that nook on its own, or if you have guests over, it morphs with the larger grouping into one big seating area,??? says Lewis.

Keep the Nook???s Floor Bare: ???I love all kinds of rugs in all kinds of spaces. But in a narrow room, an area without one can open the space and help it feel airier,??? says Lewis. ???In this scenario, it???s often better to go with one attention-grabbing rug for the main area.???

From the article:

Here are a few suggestions to keep your house running smoothly enough this summer.

Floors are foundational. When in doubt, sweep. I can handle a certain amount of disarray, but it feels like all the wheels are coming off when there are grit, sand and dog fur underfoot. We moved into our new house in the dog days of summer and had to wait until the cooling temperatures of mid-September to have our lawn seeded. This meant my kids and the dog were tracking in bright orange clay and sand all day long, and I almost lost my mind.

I try to sweep daily. In the summer especially, whenever I’m starting to feel twitchy, I know it’s time to break out a broom or the Swiffer and attack the floors. It’s my bottom line in every sense.

Put away the extras. Did you just return from the beach? Are your bags and baskets dumped by the door? Got back from vacation a week ago and you’re still living out of your suitcases?

This is the line of demarcation between the Naturally Organized and those of us who are decidedly not. The Naturally Organized, no matter how exhausted, will summon the strength to put everything away, right away, because it will drive them mad to leave it.

It’s usually a stick in the eye for those of who live with them. We just want to collapse and relax, but when your vacation has thrown up all over your house, that’s the last thing to do. It’s time to hit it. Call all the kids and have everyone pitch in. Gather all the dirty clothes and take them to the laundry room; put away all the clean clothes and toiletries and return the suitcases to storage. That last one will almost kill you ??? I know ??? but doing it will feel great.

Trip to the beach? Hang any wet towels and suits and put away the toys and leftover snacks. If you brought a cooler, be sure to empty it! We Not Naturally Organized folks love to forget that.

It really takes only a few minutes, and none of it requires thinking, just a bit of running around.

Create a sacred space. My home is open concept. When you walk in the front door, there is a small entry that ushers you into the main room: an 8-foot farm table straight ahead, kitchen to the left and living room to the right.

Our kitchen is basically a galley with a large island replacing the second wall. The island is the first horizontal surface you find coming in from the mudroom, and I knew it would be ground zero for all the crap our family drags in.

Thanks to respectful requests, outright threats and repeated confiscations, the island is usually clear. The end of our table, just adjacent, is another story, but we’re on a journey, right?

Pick a space and fight to keep it clean and free of clutter.

Looking for Ways to Make Your Home Better This Year? Find Out How Here!

With advances in technology every few years it’s possible to make improvements to your home in ways that were never possible before. In order to help you out we found this article with the 5 different areas to improve in your home. We hope they help!

From the article:

Check off these five to-dos around the house to ensure the loved ones living under your roof are safe, happy and healthy in the year to come.

Test your home’s indoor air quality
As frightening as it sounds, the air you’re breathing indoors could be more dangerous than the air outdoors.

One way to go about testing is to hire a professional to check for specific allergens or chemicals, like radon, asbestos, or mold and other toxic materials. Pros who specialize in a certain type of testing will take a sample and diagnose any problems fairly quickly. Another option for testing is to check for anything and everything in one swoop. The cost to test for a wider range of pollutants is higher, but you???ll check a lot of potential problems off the list before anything becomes an issue.

Be sure your home is insulated properly
According to Energy.gov, unless your home was specially constructed for energy efficiency, you can probably reduce your energy bills by adding more insulation. Insulation provides resistance to heat flow, and the more heat flow resistance your insulation provides, the lower your heating and cooling costs.

To determine if you could be saving, bring in a qualified home energy auditor to assess your home’s insulation. A whole-house energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, will identify the location and amount of insulation in your home and pinpoint areas in need of air sealing???sealing those spots will also cut costs in the long run.

Once you’ve determined the condition of your existing insulation, you can find the right contractor to add insulation to your home. Remember: Even if you go for more expensive materials and pay a hefty price up front, you’re almost sure to recoup that money thanks to lower energy bills over time.
