Be Safe

  1. Get out fast! When you hear the loud beep of the smoke alarm, get out of the house. Never hide or take time to grab your belongings or pets.
  2. Follow your escape plan. After all, you’ve been practicing!
  3. Feel a door before you open it. If it is hot, there may be fire on the other side. Try to get out another way.
  4. Stay low to the floor. Since smoke rises, the safest air for breathing is down low.
  5. Call 9-1-1 or the fire department. Be sure to do this after you get out of the house. Remember: Only call 9-1-1 if there is a real emergency.
  6. Stay out! Once you’re out, stay out. Don’t go back for anything!

From the article:

Part of my goal in 2014 is to find more balance, and part of that means placing an effort on taking better care of myself. Things like a better sleep schedule, a better daily routine, making time to eat better throughout the day and having the ability to step away from the computer to get in a quick workout. This past year I found that I was at my best when I would toss on my workout clothes and go for a quick run. Outside. But the winter months don’t allow for me to do that, and I find myself spending more time on the computer and snacking than getting active. Not a great combo.

We purchased a treadmill years ago, and it is something you don’t see make an appearance on the blog all that often because 1) it doesn’t get used as much as it should and 2) it is ugly.

This little update sure put a fire in me to want to run inside and make better use of that little corner of ours. I always say I feel more productive in a neat and orderly environment, and this is definitely no exception to that rule.

OrganizedExerciseRoom20

As far as a routine goes, I sort of just do what I have time for and what I feel like I want to focus on for the day. My goal is 15-30 minutes of some sort of exercise Monday – Friday, just to break up the hours of sitting I do on the computer, but any tips and suggestions from those of you who have mastered this already would be sincerely appreciated.

Looking to Learn How to Speed Clean? Learn How Here!

CleanDo you feel like cleaning your home during the summer? If you’re like most of us then the answer is probably no. You’d rather be outside or spending quality time with your family. From the article:

Here are my favorite speed cleaning tips for fast and efficient housekeeping!

1. Get your daily routines down.
If I keep up with my basic routines, things don???t get so out of control in the first place. My house will stay clean enough! Trust me on this, cleaning routines will change your life.

Try my 4 Daily Routines or make up your own! The important thing is that you get yourself in a simple rhythm of daily upkeep of your home. Once you do, all the other necessary homemaking tasks will not seem so overwhelming or take so long in a day. This is so important!

2. Dress for success!
Want to fly through your cleaning routine? What you wear just might affect the efficiency in which you clean! I certainly find that to be true. I actually do not clean well in my PJs. Sorry to disappoint you PJ loving people, but it just doesn???t work for me. My clothes tell me what I can accomplish. PJs and slippers tell me to be lazy and slow and maybe even crawl back in bed. I can do a quick load of laundry while still in my PJs, but anything else and I am good for nothing.

Shoes and clothes tell me it is time to get down to business and start the day. Too nice of clothes tell me I shouldn???t clean at all. Aprons tell me it is OK to tackle a quick cleaning job no matter what I???m wearing.

Moral of this story, I find I need to be dressed appropriately for cleaning or wear an apron in order to be efficient. Try it. Get dressed and I bet you???ll be more efficient. I dare you.

Electrical Appliances, Cords, and Outlets

  • Are your electrical appliances in good condition, without loose or frayed cords or plugs?
  • Are your outlets overloaded with plugs from the TV, computer, printer, video game system, and stereo?
  • Are you overusing an extension cord?
  • Do the light fixtures in your home use bulbs that are the correct wattage?
  • Does your home contain GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters) and/or AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters), which prevent electrical shock and fire by shutting off faulty circuits?

Look around your house for potential problems. And unless you’re a trained electrician, be careful about do-it-yourself electrical projects. Studies have shown that many home fires are caused by improper installation of electrical devices.

Learn Why You Should Do A Home Inventory Here

From the article:

If your home is struck by a burglary, fire, flood, earthquake, or other disaster, one of the first questions you will be asked is, “What property was lost, destroyed, or stolen?” It’s almost impossible to pull up such information out of your brain on a good day — and it’s twice as hard in the aftermath of a traumatic event.

This is one of those tasks that is easy to say one will do “tomorrow.” But do it today. Being able to pull out an up-to-date home inventory will make it hugely easier to deal with police and your insurance company.

Fortunately, making a home inventory isn’t onerous, and might actually prompt you to prevent the loss itself. As you inventory your possessions, you’ll become more aware of their vulnerability, and can take steps to secure them.

Start by walking through your house with a pad of paper and a still or video camera. Jot down a list of any items worth more than $50 or so and take pictures of them. Go room by room, and don’t forget the garage, attic, and basement. Be sure to include jewelry, clothing and shoes, stamp or coin collections, CD and record collections, silver, tools, and electronic equipment.

Laundry Room Flooding Horror Story

From the article:

The first load of laundry in Lona Massong’s new Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine went smoothly.

Load No. 2, well, that’s a different story.

Massong filled the machine with clothes, poured in the soap and turned the dial.

When she returned to the first-floor laundry room a short time later, she found herself standing in a pool of water.

She ran down to her finished basement and found the ceiling caving in, the carpet soaked and a wall saturated with water.

Massong and her husband turned off the machine, cleaned up the mess and immediately called Grand Appliance, where the couple had purchased the washing machine.

Two days later, on Aug. 9, a repairman came to their Wadsworth home, dragged the washing machine into the driveway and looked underneath.

It didn’t take him long to find the problem. A clamp that was supposed to connect the washing machine’s drain hose to the drain pump was missing, so when the clothes in the second load began squishing around, the motion dislodged the hose, sending water everywhere.

Grand Appliance replaced the washer but said the damage to Massong’s basement was Whirlpool’s responsibility because the manufacturer failed to attach the clamp.

Massong called Whirlpool, which instructed her to get two estimates. One estimate put the damage at $5,660, Massong said, and another was closer to $6,000.

Whirlpool hired Eagle Adjusting Services Inc. to examine the claim. Eagle Adjusting came up with its own, considerably lower estimate, placing the damage at $4,575.38. It then subtracted $1,072.18 for “depreciation,” saying nothing in Massong’s basement was new.

The final offer from Whirlpool, based on Eagle’s estimate, was $3,503.20, a number that did not sit well with Massong.

From the article:

Save Water with Every Flush
Why flush away more gallons than you need to do the job? In other countries it???s common for toilets to have two settings ??? one for when less water is needed, and a second for when more water is needed. But with a $100 kit, your toilet also can have two flush options.

An even simpler way to save water is by gently placing a sealed half-gallon container of water in your tank. The container displaces new water, saving a half-gallon per flush. With the average American flushing five times per day, each half-gallon adds up to significant water savings.

Even better: Use the water once before it reaches your toilet tank. Another $100 kit can add a simple sink to the top of your toilet, allowing you to wash your hands with water that then drains into your toilet tank.

Or, if you???re feeling really ambitious, you can install a greywater system to funnel water from the sink and shower drains into the toilet tank and leave plenty left over for the garden. Just remember that you???ll need to switch to all-natural, biodegradable soaps and shampoos as well.
