From the article:

I???ve never made homemade laundry detergent. Oh, it???s been on my {too} long to-do list of things I eventually want to try my hand at making. But much like homemade toothpaste, I just haven???t gotten there yet.

(It???s probably because I???m pretty satisfied with the natural and eco-friendly detergent I am already using!)

I have, however, been collecting homemade laundry detergent recipes and pinning them to my ???For the Home??? board on Pinterest. Maybe one of these day I???ll get around to making these.

In the meantime, you can try one of these homemade laundry detergent recipes and tell me what you think:

DIY Powdered Soap Nuts
This recipes from Eco-Friendly Family looks phenomenal. I have tried soap nuts a few times and still have some leftover from my last Jenuinely Pure review. I love that they are 100 percent natural!

This recipe is unique from other homemade detergent recipes in that it appears to be cloth-diaper safe! (In my eBook, I recommend staying away from many homemade detergents because those that use soaps like Fels Naptha or Ivory can leave residue on your cloth diapers.)

From the article:

Walt Disney once said, ???It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.??? Well, my fine-mustachioed icon, it may have been fun, but sometimes it is simply impossible. The Disney theme parks had their fair share of true never-lands and rides???and here are 12 of them.

ISRAEL PAVILION (EPCOT)
israel-pavilion-565x343
In 1980, the State of Israel signed a deal to officially become part of Epcot. The proposed Israel Pavilion would have featured a menorah in the center of the courtyard, along with archaeological artifacts from The Jewish Museum in Tel Aviv. But due to possible security issues and boycotts, the Pavilion wasn???t built. Still, Israel was featured in an exhibit at the Millennium Pavilion from 1999 to 2001. It featured a simulator-movie ride called Journey to Jerusalem, a virtual tour of historic holy sites.

ATLANTIS EXPEDITION (DISNEYLAND)
Disneyland-Submarine-Voyate-Tomorrowland-565x376
Photo courtesy Imagineering Disney This premise was a reinvention of the Submarine Voyage ride. Patrons would use a mechanical arm that extended into the water, so they could get a chance to grab some doubloons and gems. It was based on the animated film Atlantis, but due to its failure at the box office, the ride never came to fruition. In its place now is Finding Nemo???s Submarine Voyage.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ROLLER COASTER (DISNEY???S AMERICA)
disneysamerica13-565x512
Photo courtesy of The Neverland Files Due to be part of Disney’s America, a proposed theme park in Haymarket, Virginia, this roller coaster would have traveled through a turn-of-the-century steel mill. The high point of the ride would have been evading a vat of molten steel. Sadly, the park was never built, and neither was this coaster.

From the article:

Sure, having an office at home sounds practical on the surface. If you can telecommute, that???s less time in the car, more time to devote to your work and more time with your family. Plus, you can ditch the tie or pantsuit and set your own hours.

So why does your home office drive you crazy? Neck and back pain, headaches, clutter, frustration, and jealousy toward those who commute an hour to sit in the corporate office all day are all symptoms of a poorly designed workspace.

Poor design creates strain and fatigue, but a well designed office can actually help you work more efficiently and frustration-free.
Read on to redesign!

Step #1: Assess Your Situation
Working at a desk is a physical activity. Every time you turn in your chair, crook your neck to use the phone, or focus on the screen, you???re using a certain set of muscles. Those muscles, like a runner???s legs or a weightlifter???s bicep, are subject to fatigue.

Okay, you???re not a triathlete in the office, but if you???re behind the desk a lot, a poor office design will leave you feeling tense and fatigued at the end of the day.

Spend a couple hours working and take note of every time you twist awkwardly in your chair, reach for a heavy object that???s too far away, get up to fetch something, or rub your sore eyes.

From the article:

The world is running out of space. Truth be told, the world is running out of a lot of things, but some very simple tweaks to our lifestyle could make the space issue less of an problem. That’s why students at the Savannah College of Art and Design built the SCADpad. It’s tiny. It’s cheap. And it’s actually kind of cool-looking.

l19he1pyu6srseovyz9x

At the end of the day, the SCADpad is a student project with all of the creative exploration that entails. Some of it makes great sense. The house is just 8-feet wide and 16-feet long, which is just a little bit smaller than a standard parking space. That unit is relevant, since at least half of America’s 105 million parking spots are empty about half the time. In fact, there are five times more parking space in America than there are cars. Why not fill them with cute but affordable houses?

That’s why students from SCAD designed one that costs about $40,000, complete with all the fun and furnishings. Each of the three SCADpod prototypes includes a small kitchen with an induction stove as well as an organic garden that’s irrigated with a unique greywater filtration and delivery system.

Students also designed the interiors???and you can tell. Some of the design choices (like the vinyl graphic-lined bathroom) look great, while others (like the “interactive fiber walls woven from 40,000 pieces of fabric”) leave a bit to be desired.

From the article:

The $147 million home at 60 Further Lane in East Hampton once belonged to Christopher H. Browne, of the Tweedy, Browne Company value investment firm, and his partner Andrew Gordon. Browne bought the 18-acre property in 1996 according to the New York Times, but because of a deal he struck allowing the seller (Elizabeth Fondaras, widow of Anastassios Fondaras, a former managing director for Stavros Niarchos???s shipping empire) to stay in the home for several summers, Browne focused his efforts on the grounds for several years. As a result, the 18-acre estate has lavish gardens, which you can see in this New York Times slideshow.

Browne and Gordon tore down the old home and replaced it with a modernist property that Gordon designed. But they had very little time to enjoy the property together. Browne died of a heart attack in 2009. He left most of his estate to Gordon, and a family fight reportedly ensued over the will. Gordon died last fall, and the family began to shop the house around.

Hamptons brokers tell FORBES the sale took place without the aid of a broker.

From the article:

Step into an alleyway in the Northeast Washington neighborhood known as Stronghold, and you will see a vegetable patch, a campfire, a view of the Capitol and a cluster of what neighbors call ???those tiny people, building their tiny houses.???

tiny-00151352495173

The people aren???t really tiny, but their homes are ??? 150 to 200 square feet of living space, some with gabled roofs, others with bright cedar walls, compact bathrooms and cozy sleeping lofts that add up to living spaces that are smaller than the walk-in closets in a suburban McMansion.

???This is the dream,??? says Rin Westcott, 28, who lives in Columbia and came out on a wintry Saturday afternoon bundled in a flower hat to help her friend Lee Pera with a tiny-house raising.

Pera, 35, wore safety goggles as she treated the cedar boards of her ???little house in the alleyway,??? one of three under construction in what is thought to be one of the country???s first tiny-house model communities.

If these affordable homes ??? which maximize every inch of interior space and look a little like well-constructed playhouses ??? are the dream, they represent a radically fresh version of what it takes to make Americans happy.

The small homes, some on wheels, don???t warrant many trips to the Container Store. There are no kitchen islands, three-car garages or living rooms that are never lived in. In fact, their increasing popularity could be seen as a denunciation of conspicuous consumption and a rejection of the idea that more is, well, more.

Wonder How Touch Screens Affect Your Child’s Brain? Find Out Here!

From the article:

Children today are surrounded by screen upon screen upon screen: second screens, third screens, screens on our wrists and even our faces. It???s not uncommon to have one in every room. Screen time???especially if you???re talking about touchscreens???is a perplexing issue all modern parents have to confront.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is unequivocal: If your kid is under 2, no screens. For older kids, two hours a day, max. But the AAP doesn???t differentiate between activities; education apps, base-jumping videos, first-person shooters, ebooks, Sesame Street, and The Shining are all thrown into the same bucket. It???s all just screen time.

Trouble is, they???re not all the same. An app that teaches your kid his ABCs isn???t the same as a television cartoon, but the AAP is probably right to be conservative with its advice. ???Researchers know almost nothing about the impact of touchscreen technology on young children,??? says Heather Kirkorian, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who is trying to find some answers. ???Our society is running a large-scale experiment with real children in the real world, and we won???t know the impact, if any, for many years to come.???

Comforting! All the more so because keeping kids away from touchscreens these days is harder than keeping them away from candy. The screens have become one of our cultural platforms???the modern agora where we get our music, movies, books, social interactions, games, and even education.

Loved Sesame Street as a Kid? It’s Not the Same Show Anymore!

When a show has been around as long as Sesame Street has you’d expect there to be some changes over the years as technology improves and to add new story lines. You don’t expect it to be so different though that the original episodes wouldn’t even be appropriate for children to watch today but that’s the case if you can believe it or not. We found this article with ten different classic scenes (videos included) that wouldn’t be aired today. We hope you find it educational and humorous!

From the article:

When the Children’s Television Workshop unleashed Sesame Street on the world in 1969, it sparked a revolution in television programming. For the first time, TV was supposed to educate children as well as entertain them ??? make learning fun, using techniques developed through years of rigorous research. Parents across the U.S. had a TV show they could feel safe letting their kids watch.

When you buy the first season on DVD or iTunes today, though, it comes with a warning:
These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child.

For parents today, especially those who grew up in the 1970s and ’80s, this is not your child’s Sesame Street. For one thing, Sesame Street has become pretty gentrified over the past 45 years ??? New York provides some examples. For another thing, “Prozacky Elmo didn’t exist,” says Virginia Heffernan in The New York Times Magazine, in a remembrance that both playfully mocks today’s heightened sensibilities and notes some real differences between the Sesame Street of yore and today’s more sanitized version.

“Oscar seems irredeemably miserable ??? hypersensitive, sarcastic, misanthropic,” Heffernan notes. “Bert, too, is described as grouchy; none of the characters, in fact, is especially sunshiney except maybe Ernie, who also seems slow.”

Sesame Street’s current producers also cite Cookie Monster’s dietary choices (including a pipe, after he smokes it for a while), the children shown riding bikes without a helmet and running through a construction site, and, in the opening scene of the very first episode, a young girl being shown around Sesame Street by a grown man, Gordon, who is not her father and is holding her hand.

It’s true that most of those things wouldn’t make it on children’s TV today. But those aren’t the only strange or even slightly disturbing early Sesame Street moments that wouldn’t pass muster with today’s sensibilities.
